Kevin Merchant, age 23, and his tutor Donald Kenyon visited the ACTS site at Christ Church Cathedral recently to talk about their relationship and how it has helped Kevin succeed and persevere. Kevin was a student in the program from age 5 until he was in the 9th grade. Don and his wife, Dorothy, have maintained a close friendship with Kevin through his high school years and while he was in the Army serving in Iraq as a medic. He is now working full-time at Hood Company in Agawam at night and attending STCC during the day, pursuing a degree in business management. He is married to Dinah and has two children, Dionna and Kevin Jr. Kevin was the recipient of a Russ Weinhold Scholarship in 2003 but delayed using it until now due to his Army commitment.
Kevin said that Mr. Kenyon was his role model. “He taught me how to be the kind of man I wanted to be. He was somebody who took care of his family and always did the right thing.” Tutors and students were inspired by Kevin that day and asked many questions. Kevin now has become a role model to others.
You can make a contribution to the Russ Weinhold Scholarship Fund by sending your donation to ACTS, 35 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01103 with a note designating the scholarship fund.
