Action Centered Tutoring Services (ACTS) was formed and incorporated as a non-profit charitable agency in 1986.
ACTS has served an average of 80 students a year for over 20 years. Because ACTS depends on the contributions of volunteer tutors, the average cost is about $500 per student per year.
Today, ACTS is a multi-site program that serves an increasing number of youth with an equal number of volunteer tutors. For each child served, an adult is needed. ACTS is helping to make a difference "one child at a time."
We believe in the value and worth of each child. We are convinced that academic success is directly proportional to the quality of each child's relationship with a significant, invested adult.
I am delighted to know that the Acion Centered Tutoring Services is helping to improve literacy in this country. You are doing such important work, and I know that there are many children and families grateful for your effort. The President and I salute your very special efforts and wish you well in gaining the support of your community for your good work. Barbara Bush, First Lady, August, 1989
I think ACTS helps a lot with schoolwork. Each Thursday at school we get new skill work to do. I bring that to ACTS and my tutor makes sure that I understand what I need to do. Then when I go to school I can raise my hand so that the teacher knows that I understand. Jessenia, a student
My student has made me aware of all the children who need mentors in their lives. Gino, a tutor
My mentor helps me to do things I never thought I could do. Isaiah, a student
I write to express my immense gratitude and enthusiasm for the ACTS program. As a mother, I have witnessed firsthand the benefits of this program and the effects it has had on the children it serves.
When my daughter joined the program in 2000, she was struggling a great deal in Language Arts. With the help of her ACTS tutor, not only has she excelled in Language Arts, but has also gained a significant amount of social skills that she will be able to use in everyday life.
Without ACTS I know my daughter's academic career would be an insurmountable challenge. I would be comforted to know that ACTS will exist for as long as she needs it. Mrs. Rodriguez, a parent
