About ACTS

Action Centered Tutoring Services (ACTS) was formed and incorporated as a non-profit charitable agency in 1986.

ACTS has served an average of 80 students a year for over 20 years. Because ACTS depends on the contributions of volunteer tutors, the average cost is about $500 per student per year.

Today, ACTS is a multi-site program that serves an increasing number of youth with an equal number of volunteer tutors. For each child served, an adult is needed. ACTS is helping to make a difference "one child at a time."

We believe in the value and worth of each child. We are convinced that academic success is directly proportional to the quality of each child's relationship with a significant, invested adult.

Testimonials

Jim Trelease
, Springfield native and nationally known author of the Read Aloud Handbook “Not one player in the Basketball Hall of Fame---not even Michael Jordan---was born wanting to play basketball. Someone outside the child had to plant that seed of desire within him or her. In the same way, no one is born wanting to read, write, or compute. Someone outside has to do the planting. When you participate in a program like ACTS, you’re planting seed after seed within a child. And then you pray for rain.”

Perla, a student
“To me ACTS is a very special part of my week. I relax, learn and have fun with my friends. I get to do my homework and chat about my day with my tutor.

Ambar, a student
“I have made wonderful friends in ACTS. My tutor is my mentor and my friend. I would like to be a tutor like him someday. Thanks, ACTS.”

Pat Spradley, Chief Parent & Community Engagement Officer, Springfield Public Schools
“I have had the great pleasure of recommending students to ACTS for quite a few years now. The volunteer work that this organization performs to help our Springfield Public School students improve their reading and language arts skills is to be commended.

Jeanne Levesque, a tutor
“Club Time is one of the best things ACTS offers to students, giving them a chance to learn about God and other spiritual matters like having faith, prayer and helping others.”

Juliet Hansen, a tutor
“ACTS is a stable and safe place for kids where all kids are treated with respect.”
